Lay Betting Tips: Who to avoid on the punt 7/2/26

This week we present two excellent risks at Randwick, both of which come up poison prices and represent strong opportunities to oppose them in betting.

Early in the day, the Lonhro Plate for two year olds looks a race where volatility in juvenile form should be expected. A hyped Ciaron Maher runner has proven popular with the mug money, however expect that support to be tested once the professional teams enter the market late.

Later on the card, a star filly returns but appears unlikely to be fully wound up, with plenty of physical improvement still to come.

Avoid both runners at their current short prices in betting.

Randwick Race 3 #5 Spicy Miss $2.60

We continue our theme of opposing hyped two year olds with limited race exposure who appear to be priced well below their true chance.

This Ciaron Maher filly was solid on debut when finishing second behind Revengence, however she has since been put away, and the gap between her only run and this assignment could easily prove a negative rather than a positive.

This is a deep juvenile race, with several runners specifically saved and targeted for this event. While she must be showing ability at home, the market has clearly overreached at the current quote.

I am keen to be against her and expect a noticeable market drift close to start time as professional money gaps her on the exchange, where prices beyond $3 could become available.

Avoid.

Randwick Race 8 #3 Tempted $1.80

There is no question she is very talented, however taking odds on about her first up looks extremely risky.

She appears set for a long autumn preparation, with improvement expected to come physically as the campaign progresses. This race does not profile as the target.

Another key factor is the rider booking of Chad Schofield, which is a clear downgrade from elite options such as James McDonald. More importantly, his former connections will be highly motivated to ensure he is not given an easy passage, adding an extra layer of pressure to the ride.

Her racing pattern suggests she will be settling back in the field, and this has proven problematic in the past when similar pressure situations have arisen.

At the current price she represents an excellent risk, and I will be very active taking her on.
