False Favourites

This week we focus on two warm favourites that both face significant challenges and appear falsely installed at the top of the market in their respective races.

At Flemington, a last start winner steps back up in grade and may struggle to overcome the race shape, particularly if given a conservative ride.

Meanwhile at Randwick, a former Golden Slipper favourite resumes without any recent racing to aid fitness. A number of race fit juveniles engaged here should have a clear advantage.

Saturday Lays of the Day 7/3/26

Flemington Race 2 #3 She’s An Artist $2.00

Appears naturally overbet following her first up win at Caulfield, where she did not beat much in what was a weak race and enjoyed the perfect run three wide with cover.

She received the ideal slingshot into the race and was entitled to finish off strongly under those circumstances.

However, the setup here is completely different down the Flemington straight, and she is unlikely to receive the same favours.

This is a significantly deeper race than the one she faced first up.

She now rises to Benchmark 86 grade and meets a field with far more depth and quality.

With Jamie Melham engaged, there is also a strong chance she will be ridden conservatively behind the leading division.

If the leaders quicken inside the final 400 metres, she may find herself out of position and chasing too late.

At the current price she appears an excellent risk.

Avoid.

Randwick Race 4 #4 Paradoxium $2.90

This runner presents with a very similar profile to Warwoven last week, which we identified as a strong lay before his condition gave out late to finish unplaced.

Another Bjorn Baker juvenile returns here after a setback and must take on several race fit two year olds who are likely to run along and ensure this is a genuine test.

For a young colt lacking recent racing, the current quote looks very short.

Much like Warwoven last week, he shapes as a horse who could be vulnerable late.

Inside the final 200 metres I expect his fitness to be tested, particularly if the pressure builds through the middle stages.

A further market drift beyond $3 would not surprise.

If they elect to ride him forward and the tempo increases, sustaining a strong run to the line may prove difficult.

Lay.
