Saturday’s meeting was heavily influenced by the track pattern, and punters who looked beyond the results sheet would have noticed several horses performing well despite racing against the day’s clear bias.

The numbers told the story.

The rail in run produced just 3 of the 10 winners, while runners positioned one-off the fence accounted for 7 of the 10 winners. It proved a distinct disadvantage to race wider than one-off the fence, particularly for horses forced to cover extra ground.

Position in running was also critical. A remarkable 9 of the 10 winners settled inside the first six in the run, with Pinito the only runner to break that trend after settling seventh.

With that pattern in mind, the following runners all performed well against the bias and go straight into the black book.

Horses to Follow

  • Caffe Florian

  • Serephox

  • Pippie Beach

  • Giga Kick

  • Lady Shenandoah

  • Eagle Express

  • Abounding

While not all of these runners are guaranteed to win next start, each produced a performance that should improve significantly under fairer race conditions.

The Standouts

Caffe Florian

Was doing her best work late despite the race being run at a tempo far too slow for her to run down the leaders against the day’s pattern.

Under a genuinely run race and a more even track, she profiles as a major chance.

Lady Shenandoah

Produced the 6th fastest last 100m of the entire meeting despite settling 6.5 lengths off the leaders, a position that proved very difficult to make ground from.

A victim of a poor barrier draw, she looks set to peak third-up this preparation.

Eagle Express

A tough effort after racing three-wide without cover against the prevailing pattern.

She stuck on strongly despite the disadvantage.

Fortunately the race was run at a very slow tempo, meaning she should come through the run in good order and be ready to improve next start.
