Classic Afterthought Mentality

This week we focus on two runners entered on the final day of the Melbourne Spring Carnival after either contesting or missing their major targets earlier in the carnival.

Both appear vulnerable and come up as excellent risks at their current quotes.

In what shapes as a Melbourne Cup consolation race, a runner who narrowly missed securing a place in the Cup field looks vulnerable due to his erratic racing manners, with the popular Waller and J Mac combination certain to attract plenty of mug money.

Whilst later in the day, the Cox Plate hero returns after his Grand Final performance and looks an excellent risk in a race where he may not receive the same strong tempo that suited him perfectly last start.

Saturday Lays of the Day 7/11/26

Flemington Race 3 #4 Pinhole $3.80

Unlucky to miss out on a run in the Melbourne Cup, however this now looks a classic afterthought, with connections electing to run him on the final day of Cup week after missing their major target.

He would have been prepared right up to the minute for the Melbourne Cup over 3200 metres, meaning the drop back to 2600 metres presents a completely different challenge from a training and race fitness perspective.

The stable would have had him conditioned for the longer staying trip and I am not convinced this shorter assignment will suit him anywhere near as well.

His racing manners are also a significant concern.

He remains a high risk proposition every time he steps onto the track, with a tendency to get right up on the steel and over race through the early stages.

Over these staying distances, conserving energy is absolutely critical, and if he repeats those antics against seasoned opposition, he will have an enormous task trying to finish the race off.

The mugs will naturally steam into the Waller and J Mac combination, with bookmakers likely to keep him artificially short throughout betting due to the expected weight of recreational investment.

At $3.80, the market appears to be overlooking both the questionable placement and the genuine risk surrounding his racing manners.

He looks an excellent opportunity to take on a popular runner on the final day of the carnival.

Avoid.

Flemington Race 8 #1 Cosmic Crusader $3.00

Heavily against the Cox Plate hero here, who had his birthday last start when everything fell perfectly into place.

The brutally strong tempo suited his racing pattern down to the ground, allowing him to conserve energy before dropping on the leaders late when they were beginning to feel the pinch.

I seriously doubt he receives the same favours on this occasion.

There is every chance this race develops into a much slower affair through the middle stages, leaving him with a significant tactical disadvantage when the sprint goes on.

If they crawl through the mid sections and the leaders are allowed to kick strongly turning for home, he could find himself chasing from too far back and simply run out of runway.

The placement also has the smell of a classic afterthought.

He was clearly prepared to peak in the Cox Plate and duly delivered, however backing up for another major assignment after such a demanding performance presents a significant risk.

There must be genuine questions surrounding how well he has recovered from that brutally run race, particularly with the possibility he has already produced his peak performance for the preparation.

I feel the stable could be going to the well once too often here, with the horse potentially on the way down whilst several of his rivals arrive with fresher legs.

At the current quote, punters are being asked to pay for the Cox Plate heroics without considering how differently this race could unfold.

More than happy to take him on.

Avoid.
